Drama is a land of valleys and mountains with alpine refuges and ski resorts. Glorious forests give home to flocks of birds. Fertile ground and tobacco plantations. Caves with enormous multicoloured stalactites. Rivers whose lyrical waters bubble gently.

Drama lies at the foot of Mount Falakro which is called the mountain of flowers by the locals but means literally ‘bald mountain’. A mountain of incredible beauty with ski slopes and well eqipped refuges for climbers. It highest summit – Profitis Ilias, stands at 2232 meters above the sea level.

Cave Maras in Prossotsani

Cave AggitisThe Maras Cave, situated in the area of Kokkinogia, was discovered in September 1978 by a team of Greek and French speleologists. The latter, departing from some natural phenomena, maintained that the waters of the sources of the Aggitis River were flowing through a cave. In order to uphold their theory, they conducted underwater exploration of  the sources by means of diving suits. At a depth of 7 m, they discovered a passage leading to the cave. A huge gallery measuring some 500 m in length was also found. Its ceiling is dripping with stalactites, some of which attain a diameter of 2 m and reach the surface of the water. Their amazing colors are attributed to the existence of ores (manganese, iron, copper, etc).

The Forest of Elatia (or Kará Dere)

The area is located in the central and northern parts of Drama prefecture and extends along the Greek-Bulgarian border. It is characterised by dense forests that cover 90% of the area and by the forest village of Elatia.
You’ll find the forest village of Elatia at the location known as “Koutra” which is situated 72 km from Drama.
The village consists of impressive stone buildings that are used by the Forest Service to accommodate visitors, among other things. It is fully equipped with running water, electricity and telephones. The only forest of spruce trees in the country is to be found at Elatia where the landscape brings similar landscapes in central and northern Europe to mind.
